Unrelated to screenwriting but interesting…

Interesting comments people have phoned in about concerning the current Mel Gibson story… Listen to them below.
I’m curious about this story for several reasons…
First, Mel Gibson is one of the few Republicans in Hollywood so in my opinion, he’s definitely going to take a slightly harder beating than a Democrat.
Second, many many people all over the world, let alone America, thought PASSION OF THE CHRIST was anti-Semitic.
Third, with the alleged anti-Semitic remarks made during the arrest, will a simple press released apology be enough? Especially with the world’s current events?
I predict he will apologize quite a few more times… Check himself into some kind of alcohol rehab program… Get out — more apologies. Slowly slide back behind the scenes into producing… Maybe directing but something tells me that might take a while. I don’t think we’ll see any acting for awhile…
I could be wrong… Will be interesting to watch.
Probably the best coverage on the web is here: Mel Gibson DUI arrest

time to contact Danny Glover and strap on the side arm one more time
That’s unfortunate. I think it’s personally embarassing to be caught in that situation. So much so, that I’d rather acknowledge him as a person and move on without doing a deep dive into all the details.
Mel’s done a lot of good things, he’s been entertaining and done well because if it. I don’t expect him to be perfect though.
Isn’t it enough that he knows what he’s done?
I would hope for his own sake, he does check into rehab or something since he doesn’t appear to be a the “good ol’ friendly drunk”.
Shame.
I didn’t see any antisemitism in THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, mainly because the story was told pretty close to what I grew up being taught in Sunday School and what I’ve personally read in the Bible (the only major difference I saw was the Devil in the crowd). Thus I never thought of Gibson as antisemitic.
However, when one gets rip-roarin’ drunk unabashed honest feelings tend to float to the surface (one of the reasons I drink in moderation). So now I see him in that light.
It’ll be interesting to see how he is treated by Hollywood now.
I think a bigger issue is that he has fallen off the wagon. Why? I remember seeing a trailer for APOCOLYPTO that said SUMMER ‘06. Did it get pushed back, and if so, why? Could some behind the scenes stuff have caused him to turn back to the bottle?
