Hacked again…

Okay, just found out that we got hacked again. We caught them red handed this time but there isn’t anything we can do since they hail from Russia… LOL.

It looks like we’re going to have to take the site down completely and rebuild from scratch and I have no idea how long it’s going to take because first, we have to make sure we don’t lose any posts or comments…

So if you see the site down here and there, rest assured that it’s ONLY because we’re working on plugging up all the holes. Hopefully, it will be a seamless task and not have the site down too long…

Sorry for the inconvenience…

I’m a pretty good Web developer. Let me know if I can help. Security is my specialty.

    Christian,

    Thanks… Much appreciated.

What my guy is telling me is that this old version of WordPress has too many security issues and that we simply need to upgrade.

Unfortunately, we’ve attempted to do that three times so far and each time, the site goes down i.e., something’s gotten screwed up over time with the current installation and the script updates.

So we’re going to save the database, delete the site and then install the latest version of WordPress again and hopefully, that should do it.

I haven’t been able to upgrade this current install for quite a few versions and we keep finding out that updating the script is a necessity.

    Thanks again,

    Unk

Well, it’s a right of passage now-a-days, isn’t it? I have yet to earn my stripes. Please share with us fellow WordPress users any security tips you pick up.

Oh — upgrade. Good tip. Got it covered.

Good luck, Unk. If you need a big, ugly lookin’ dude to stand at the door, call me.

For some reason, I keep getting literally THOUSANDS of service attacks 24 hours a day - 7 days a week for the last couple of weeks.

I run this on a Plesk server which is much more secure than Cpanel but unfortunately, the hackers keep attacking through WordPress and the forum.

They’re obviously doing it remotely i.e., using some kind of software or program specifically written for this kind of attack.

I can plainly see the IP addresses as the attacks occur… Many are masked but most are from Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwan.

None of the other sites on this server are being attacked so I’m a little confused… There really isn’t anything here worth hacking… LOL.

Or is it just to see if they can do it? I guess they want to be able to stick up a HACKED BY SO AND SO homepage so they can bathe in their glory.

From what it looks like, they are specifically looking for specific security holes in older versions of WordPress and Simple Machines scripts and apparently, the IP addresses from Arabia are going after the forum and the IP addresses from Russia are going after the blog.

Database is already saved so fuck’em.

I always get up after being knocked on my ass.

Or is it bask in their glory?

Not a problem. As a .Net developer, I don’t like scripted websites. Hope it gets fixed. If you ever want a new-fangled AJAX website, I’m your man. Your site would be easy.

Oh Noes! This will disrupt my daily routine!

Those bastards probably work for the AMPTP. They’ll truly stop at nothing.

what is weird out of this is in the next few years there will be an onslaught of really good screenplays coming out of Russian and Taiwan haha… that is if they chose to read some of what they are hacking here

Hey, this sucks. I’ve been reading all this stuff on here for a little bit, and I haven’t finished. This is going to suck. Unk I do have a question about writing scripts. I’m just getting into this and have been reading about it alot. I have seen different ways to write out a script. I’ve read scripts and it seems like they are different from each other. What is the proper way to type out a script? When do you capitalize the names, etc…? Could you please shed some light on this for me? Thanks for your time.

Is there a website that explains the basics of writing screenplays. I’m writing one now, and I’m learning a lot by writing it. I’m learning more as writing it as to just reading it and not writing it. Sorry this is such a stupid question. But I would appreciate it if you could help, I just don’t know where to go. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Someone out there definitely has a problem with structural approaches to screenwriting… I don’t know how many Russian movies you’ve watched, but they tend not to follow “The Hero’s Journey”… instead they meander around for two to three hours, with nothing much happening except a lot of chat about religion, art and philosophy. (Personally I love them, but I appear to be one of the few people able to stay awake to see a whole one)…
Maybe, these attacks are because they’re afraid even more tightly plotted, commercial, western films will flood their market like Coca Cola and Levi’s, destroying their cultural heritage.

But, seriously for a moment… I know you also host a few other sites on your server, is it possible they’re getting in via one of those?

  14. Unk on November 19th, 2007 8:26 pm

    Christian,

If the upgrade doesn’t work, I may take you up on that… I’m just not particularly in the mode of learning anything NEW write now… LOL.

    Thanks again…

    emily,

    Daily routine? You honor me…

    Moviequill,

I actually have some of my own Russian hacking friends that I’ve made online over the past years… I was even able to hook several of them up with a recent movie being shot in Moscow back in October… They got to visit the set and get some autographs.

They’re looking into this for me… LOL. And they’ve already got some THINGS happening for me. Remote hacking has gone down in half.

    Ryan,

If the site does go down, it wouldn’t be for more than a few hours… Just long enough to DELETE the site completely and then reinstall WordPress and then upload the database. If and when we do that, I’ll probably perform that function in the wee hours of the morning.

    Ryan,

This should give you a baseline to start at:

    The Basics of Screenwriting

The above articles have info on formatting but here’s another decent primer:

    A Few Notes on Formatting

Remember… Much of basic formatting is subjective. Learn the basic rules first and THEN, as you and your writing improve and you feel that doing something in addition to the basic rules would ENHANCE what you’re writing but stay within a gray area of screenplay formatting, go ahead and deviate if you feel the enhancement makes sense.

And don’t let formatting get you bogged down OR keep you from writing on a day to day basis… You can always come back after the script is finished and transcribe.

    Clive,

No… We can see that the hackers are going in through the WordPress script and the Forum script.

No other web sites are being touched at all… That’s why we are monitoring it… We also get instant email notifications when any part of a site is being remote hacked.

It’s like all the stupid fucks that try to remote submit spam comments to this site… None of their comments make it through the initial barrier because 99% of the comments contain links in them and I have it set so those comments must be moderated… Even my own.

2% of the hackers are a little more devious however… They try to submit a clean comment with NO link contained in it in hopes of getting it approved because after a first comment is approved, it is automatically approved every time after that UNLESS of course it contains a link. LOL.

So either way, their links aren’t going to get on here unless I personally approve them.

Such is life on the net… Occupational hazards all around.

    UNK,
    Just let me know.

Jackasses. Somebody has to ruin the fun for everybody. And for what?

Couldn’t shoot the hackers fast enough to satisfy me.

    Good luck, Unk!

If in doubt, stay consistant. If you are not sure, it is better to get a format consistently wrong, than keep chopping and changing. Just try to make it as simple and idiot proof as possible.
