Dead Dog Barking
So sure, like most of us, I read John August’s blog from time to time and have been keen to use the newly developed scrippet plugin he had developed for WordPress and now even a few other content management systems.
Pretty much everywhere I see it being used, it looks very good and it’s outstanding for quickly getting up some screenwriting examples or scene challenges as Mr. August had recently.
But of course like EVERYTHING I attempt to do, MURPHY’S LAW rears its head and we go nine rounds… The scrippet was a snap to install and it SEEMS to work for me except for the dialogue. It keeps wanting to skip a line before printing it out.
I headed on over the scrippet forum and indeed, something is mentioned about the problem I’m experiencing so I went ahead and registered and asked for some help.
But so you can see how it works, take a gander…
INT. UNK’S HOUSE – BEDROOM – NIGHT
INDEX CARDS upon INDEX CARDS layer a textured wall as UNK (50), outfit in tortoise shell RAY BANS, BANGS away at his laptop.
A BARKING DOG in the distance.
UNK
I’ve had it with that fuckin’ dog.
More BANGING -- more BARKING.
Unk shoves the laptop forward on the bed -- pulls his .22 RUGER AUTOMATIC from under the pillow, checks the clip:
Full.
He shuffles down the hallway to the
KITCHEN
opens the refrigerator door -- retrieves a
BOTTLE OF WATER
unscrews the top -- screws the .22’s barrel into the opening -- tight.
EXT. UNK’S HOUSE
Front door eases open, Unk slides out -- .22 dangling to his side.
BARKING louder now -- Unk disappears into the night.
EXT. STUCCO WALL
BARKING almost deafening -- a SILHOUETTE of the .22 and attached bottle of DRIPPING water hovers against a FULL MOON.
The SILHOUETTE of Unk’s head follows as the weapon angles across the wall and down.
PFFTCLACKGLUGGLUGGLUG -- BURST of water -- muffled YELP -- no more barking.
Both silhouettes fade backward into the night.
INT. UNK’S HOUSE – BEDROOM – NIGHT
INDEX CARDS upon INDEX CARDS layer a textured wall as Unk BANGS away at his laptop.
FADE OUT.
What’s even more cool is that the same thing can be done in the comments section by anyone. I should also thank Nima Yousefi for her hard work in getting this plugin completed.
So if you have a blog or forum about screenwriting, definitely get this plugin!

Before I continue with The Transformational Character Arc Part 7…
Well it looks like the black design wins out with 112 votes against 109 votes for white.
Whew… And I didn’t even have to break a tie with my own vote! But hey, since so many of you seem to like the white design, I won’t get rid of it… I’ll go ahead and keep it — and change back to it once in a while. We all need a change every so often, so when I feel like I need a change, I’ll switch to the other theme. LOL.
You’ll notice “quotes†at the top of the page now… I actually collect quotes from all kinds of writers and that, in and of itself is another post for the future because there is literally a ton of stuff you can learn from a good quote other than the obvious…
Of course I’m talking about screenwriting.
Something else you may have figured out on one of your recent visits here is that SOME of the above quotes actually come from our very own SCRIBOSPHERE. That’s right, I actually visit every one of your blogs throughout the week when I take a break here and there… Sometimes I have to read for awhile to catch up but all in all, I’ve found some really good stuff out there so I hope you don’t mind me culling some of the insightful tidbits I find worth sharing… I’ve even added a link to the person who made the quote so you might even get some additional traffic out of it. With well over 1500 hits here every day, you never know… You just might pick up a faithful reader or two.
If you do come here and happen to see one of your very own quotes and you get pissed off at me… Not a problem. Just tell me and it’s down. I’ve tried to pick insightful quotes but I have to admit… When I come across something that struck me as funny, I might have culled it as well. It’s definitely a work in progress and will grow and grow as I read more of your stuff and collect those really good nuggets of information but again, if you don’t want to be included, just let me know.
Yes, that even goes for my hate email… LOL.
I really do look at this (the SCRIBOSPHERE) more like a community than just one or two blogs… And, since I can fucking talk about screenwriting 24/7; reading all your blogs is really the next best thing for ME since NOBODY I know wants to fucking hear me talk about screenwriting 24/7.
In fact, let me take this opportunity to toss a question out there to ANYONE that might be interested… I’m considering sticking up another blog/site that would contain ONLY screenwriting articles… How-to info, tips, tricks, whatever. Totally about screenwriting and NOT anything personal. A total resource site that I would love to see be one of the ultimate resources about screenwriting.
No advertising. No money involved. Although if it were to become successful enough, we could eventually jam some RELEVANT advertising on it and use whatever revenue that comes in for workshops, get togethers, what-have-you.
So the obvious question… Why would you want to contribute to something like this? Good question. For one, you get to show us how much you know about screenwriting… Okay, so you don’t fucking care about that. Second, each article you contribute will contain a LINK BACK to YOUR SITE assuming you have one. Just that alone could easily increase your own site’s readership… No, I’m not going to allow any personal affiliate links to products but if we decide to toss up some advertising somewhere down the line so that the project could bring in some revenue, we can use that revenue to further OUR own screenwriting education.
Of course having a link back to your own site means that each article you contribute should be a substantial article. None of the articles will get automatic approval… At least not in the beginning. In fact, with WordPress, we have the ability to FRONTLOAD articles so that we can actually publish a new one every day assuming we have enough contributors.
Another reason the articles won’t be automatically published as they are completed is because they will need to be properly tagged so as to gain maximum exposure. There’s absolutely no reason this new site couldn’t be one of the TOP resources sites on the subject of screenwriting.
Why do I want contributors?
Another good question… Because I sure as HELL don’t know all there is to know about the subject. On top of that, just when I feel like I do know a lot about a particular aspect of screenwriting, I turn right around and read something on one of your blogs or sites out there and find some little nugget that EASILY expands my knowledge.
I LOVE THAT!
So lots of MINDS working together…
Some of you may be of the opinion that everything’s already been written on the subject that CAN BE WRITTEN. Nope. Ain’t gonna happen… EVER! And, as creative types come up with more creative angles to attack screenwriting, the more is going to be written about the subject.
Another question… But I’m not a professional screenwriter… Who gives a shit what I think? I DO. Plain and simple. And, if you can translate that knowledge to a substantial article on the subject, I want to read it! And if I want to read it, chances are outstanding that thousands of others want to read it too.
Another obvious question… Why should anyone contribute when they already have their own site or blog? TRAFFIC. I would assume that once a certain personality writes enough substantial articles on the subject of screenwriting, READERS are going to want MORE. They always do. This site is growing by LEAPS and BOUNDS in its readership but if you’re anything like ME, you never put all your eggs in one basket when it comes to screenwriting… You read as much as you can — absorb as much as you can — and take on ONLY what FEELS right for YOU.
That’s why I don’t care if you’re a professional or not… Often, the only thing standing in the way of someone becoming a REAL PROFESSIONAL is that first fuckin’ sale anyway.
I don’t care about that if you’ve got something SUBSTANTIAL to share with us about the subject of screenwriting. And of course, the bottom line is that WHO KNOWS WHERE IT COULD LEAD? I won’t say any more than that.
The contributions won’t be for this site… I’m creating an entirely NEW site for this project. If you’re interested in becoming a contributor, send me an email via the CONTACT page. That’s all there is to it for now. I hope to have the new site up and running by the end of the month — beginning of May.
If you send me an email, we’ll most likely get some kind of communication going back and forth… You might find out that you really want to be a contributor and then again, you might find out that you DON’T want to be a contributor.
It’s all good. If you’re interested, just let me know… I’ve already got some contributors ready to go but we need more. I’ll take as many as I can get.
